Elaine works with Coppersmith Brockelman clients on research matters involving human subjects. She is often involved in the development or review of policies or procedures that help facilitate effective agreements and comply with the myriad of federal and state regulations governing the conduct of clinical research.
Elaine has extensive experience in research administration, contracting, program review, university-industry relationships, policy development, and implementation of regulations. For many years, she was the Senior Associate Director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects at the University of Michigan. In that role, Elaine was responsible for oversight of the University-wide pre-award office, including all aspects of sponsored projects administration and related processes and policies. Elaine was also the inaugural Director of the University of Michigan Medical School Office of Technology Transfer and Corporate Research.
Under a contract from the National Cancer Institute, Elaine served as the Director of the caBIG® Data Sharing and Intellectual Capital Knowledge Center from 2008 to 2012, and sought to expand discussion and facilitate data sharing by providing a centralized, authoritative repository of processes, model agreements, and other resources.
Elaine is President and Senior Partner of Contracts, Compliance, and Conflict at Interest Authority LLC, a small company that provides comprehensive and creative services and solutions covering all aspects of research administration. She also is currently engaged as the Contract Accords Manager for the University Industry Demonstration Partnership where she oversees the development of documents intended to assist university and industry collaborators in arriving at common understandings of key issues and current topics. Elaine is also an Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University.
Elaine has served on statewide, regional, and national committees including the Contracts and Intellectual Property Committee and the Board of Directors of the Council on Governmental Relations (COGR) and has been a frequent presenter to various audiences on topics including conflict of interest, clinical trial agreements, contracting best practices, export controls, and technology transfer.
