Coppersmith Brockelman Attorneys File Lawsuit to Protect Citizen Initiatives

Since its inception, the Arizona Constitution has provided the people of Arizona with the right to initiate laws as equals to the legislature. Many laws, including the right to vote for women in Arizona, were passed through the citizen initiative process. Roopali Desai, Keith Beauchamp, Andy Gordon, and Andy Gaona, lawyers at Coppersmith Brockelman, are hard at work to protect this significant constitutional right in the wake of legislation passed by the Arizona Legislature to diminish the peoples' right to initiatives. John DeWulf Tapped for McDowell Sonoran Conservancy Board of Directors

Coppersmith Brockelman’s John DeWulf recently joined the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy’s Board of Directors. The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy works to protect Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve – one of the largest urban preserves in America – and provide information and education to visitors. The preserve spans 30,500 acres, is home to more than 180 miles of trails, and relies on the support of some 650 volunteers. John has been active with numerous charitable and professional organizations during the past three decades, including Social Venture Partners Arizona, Canyon State Academy, Youth Partners Foundation and the Arizona State Bar. The passage of Proposition 206 in November 2016 brought not just an increase in Arizona’s minimum wage, but also enactment of a new state law requiring all employers (with very narrow exceptions) to provide all employees, including part-time workers, with annual paid sick time (PST). With the July 1, 2017 effective date rapidly approaching, we want to make sure you have the important information you need to adopt or revise policies, provide notice, and update your payroll and recordkeeping practices before the law takes effect. Here’s what you need to know: How much PST must be provided? Employees must accrue a minimum of one hour of PST for every 30 hours worked.
